CTO (Chief Technology Officer) of the Year award is a platform to promote the importance of technology and innovation in Europe. The award is given to the most prominent technology leaders of highly successful European companies: persons, who are inspiring leaders and foresighted technology managers. The award recognises the most successful technology leaders in two categories: SMEs and large corporations.
CTO OF THE YEAR EUROPE 2018 AWARDS WERE ANNOUNCED 6TH FEBRUARY 2019
The CTO of the Year Europe 2018 awards were announced during EU Industry Days in Brussels. The award was granted to Dr. Nicolas Cudré-Mauroux from Solvay and Mr. Juha Salmela from Spinnova. The winners in both categories excel in driving sustainability through innovative use of technology in their companies and surrounding ecosystem. See the press release for more information.
The CTO of the Year Europe does not necessarily have to be a CTO by title. However, the person shall be responsible for the company’s technology and its development at the highest level, whether called a CTO, Head of Research, VP of Product Development, R&D Manager, Chief Scientist, or any such title.
The concept is pan-European and, as Jean-Eric Paquet, Director-General for Research and Innovation, European Commission says: “Europe needs to celebrate those who advance technology and innovate. Initiatives like the “CTO of the year award” are very welcome as they lead to role models and further strengthen innovation in Europe”.
"The global economy is going through an unprecedented transformation. Industry leadership is no longer secured by brand or customer loyalty, but rather by new business models, mega trends and disruptive technologies. Likewise, today innovation is almost always driven by technology. Yet any Chief Technology Officer-like role only emerges if and when efforts are made to develop something truly ground-breaking. It is oftentimes forgotten that the CTO responsibilities are to stimulate growth through innovation, and not only manage technologies. CTO of the Year award promotes technological innovation and gives recognition to people who work hard to support European competitiveness. We are not looking for a Chief Technology Officer of Europe, equivalent to the U.S. CTO, who focuses on country’s technology policy, but we are most definitely looking for role models to fuel growth and strengthen European innovation and technology leadership". - Tomas Hedenborg, CEO of FASTEMS Oy Ab; President of Orgalime
